About the course

Good sexual and reproductive health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being in all matters relating to the reproductive system. It implies that people are able to have a satisfying and safe sex life, the capability to reproduce, and the freedom to decide if, when, and how often to do so.

It is important to enhance the understanding, knowledge and skills of nurses in maternity care and modern principles and practices of sound care in pregnancy, labour and birth and the postpartum period, for better case management and appropriate interventions while maintaining safety.

This course is designed to provide nurses in depth knowledge about antenatal care, intranatal care, postnatal care and neonatal care.

Learning Outcomes

  • Illustrate aims, objectives, warning signs and minor ailments during antenatal period.
  • Discuss normal labour, stages of labour and mechanism of labour.
  • Explain physiological changes in puerperium and postpartum discomforts.
  • Discuss the WHO guidelines for the mother and the newborn.
  • Describe initial care of newborn and newborn safety.
